Default 98 DOHC = Premium Fuel?

I've read several places recently that it is "recommended" to put 92/93 octane fuel into Neons with DOHC engines. Has anyone done this, and does it really make a difference? I always heard that almost 100% of cars are fine with Regular fuel.

its not gonna do any harm...with the mopar pcm you need premium 91/92/93 but on a regular dohc no mods you will be fine with unleaded

When I used regular gas my mileage dropped about 6-7 mpg.
Chryslers recommendation for premium fuel is for better mileage and higher horsepower numbers.

Not any car. 93 octane is not recommended for the SOHC engine, only the DOHC.

To achieve optimal performance in the DOHC engine, 93 octane is required. You technically don't have to use it, but some people have posted about pinging problems while running a lower octane. I personally didn't experience problems while using a lower octane, but I would not rule it out.

the manual for my 99 dohc recommends 91 octane, i've run 87, and 89 also, and i can feel a slight power difference and mpg difference
