I had an issue with the recharge kits Das, but it was only because I over-filled it. Other than that I just had to recharge it every Spring. Guessing maybe because it had a leak?

The gauges read correctly and showed it as full, but no cold air. Took it to my mechanic and he put the real gauges on it and added some more refrigerant and leak tested it, no problems.

The neon does not have a cabin filter. What you can do is put a small cup of vinegar in your car and make sure all the windows are closed. The vinegar will absorb some of the smoke smell as well as any other odors that may be lurking. Let it sit overnight.
I haven't had any trouble with the kits before. I've used the ones that Quest makes twice, including recently on the neon, and one other time on an F-150 with no issues. Of course if you have a leak its going to come back out, but they also sell the refrigerant with a stop leak included, which works good for small leaks. The canister i recently purchased also had the dye in it for finding leaks.
Yeah, I'm sure the quality on any of these kits' gauages aren't that great considering the cost, especially when put in comparison with a good set of HVAC gauges. You're looking at a minimum at $100 for a cheaper set of those gauges, and I've seen them out there for $250+. Worth it though if you're in the HVAC business. It's possible you just got a bad gauge.
