Default Head Question

I have a complete random question about the head bolts on the neons. are they tourque to yield or no?

No. You torque the bolts in a specific pattern - working from the inside to outside to 25 psi on the first pass. The second pass you torque inside to outside again this time to 50psi. On the third pass, working from inside to outside again, you turn the bolts 90 degrees.

If you don't have an angular torque wrench (I don't), you can just set the wrench and turn it 90 degrees from its current position. I have done 3 heads that way so far and have not blown one gasket yet.

I find that final turning of the bolt 90 degrees is utter nonsence. What the hell do the dodge engineers think that f'ing bolt is doing as it is being torque from zero to 50 or so lbs anyway. That magical 90 turn is poopycock. Just lightly oil the head bolt threads with engine oil (DONT USE GREASE ON THE BOLTS AS THIS WILL GIVE FALSE TORQUE READINGS) and turn them in 5 lb increments. then as you approache your final torque set yout torque wrench in 2 lbs increments. Oh a use a click type wrench - not the dial kind.

The spec is 25,50,50 plus 1/4 turn. I wouldn't recomend the aproach of the last poster.

Because I am more inclined to trust the mechanical engineers than someone posting on a forum. I follow the fsm and don't have issues afterwards. The head bolts stretch when being torqued. Hence the reason they should not be reused.
