Default Acceleration Lag...any ideas?

I have a 96 dodge neon and am wondering how i can fix the hesitation in acceleration. I can floor the throttle and it will hesitate about 4 seconds before finally kicking in. I have tightend the throttle linkage cable so there isnt any slack as well as reducing the slack on the throttle cable connected to the end of the gas pedal so the throttle body opens more when floored, however not much change. any suggestions?

Check your spark plugs and/or wires.

My fourth cylinder spark plug wire slides out really easy and the other ones take some effort. Bad wire?

Try swapping it with the #1 wire and see if it pops on better. If it doesn't pop on, time to replace the wire and/or plugs.

I swapped it with the #1 wire and the wire goes in fine and then i looked at the #4 plug and the tip is broken off so the boot isnt sliding on. But wouldnt that mean my engine is running on 3 cylinders? Is that possible with an inline 4?

and if the sparkplugs and/or wires arent the issues, you might have bad fuel, or a restriction of fuel when u hit the gas.
