1998 Neon MPG increase
Recently bought a '98 Neon Sport with the 2.0 engine and automatic transmission, 97K miles. All it is to me is a commuter, so I am looking to maximize fuel economy. Anyone know of a good intake system? And as far as exhaust goes, I wouldn't mind something that flows free but I don't want this thing to sound like the obnoxious fart can muffler ricers. Also looking for some mild hp upgrades that won't cost mileage, this thing could use some help on the hills haha.
3.94 Mtx/pcm swap. Dohc and auto, is not a good combo.
Your exhaust is fine as it is.
Make your self a cold air intake with one 90d silicone bend, one 45d aluminum bend, and a k&n 9630 airfilter. Look at my garage, you can see how its made

Thanks for the info, could you go into detail on the MTX/PCM swap? I know my Cummins, new to the world of Neon. And I was looking for a little car with a 5 speed, but this one came along dirt cheap, just needed tires and a little TLC, but I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have been able to make most of it right. The transmission still shifts very firmly though. And your intake looks to be in a different place then mine, I will have to go look at it again, but as I recall, I think the air filter is located between the engine and cowl and has a rectangular opening.
For the case of mtx swap, there is a way to do it, and many has done it befor. Just search for "dodge neon mtx swap"
My intake was allso in the back of the engine.
Get rid of all that. Its fastened with two bolts inside the filter box.
If you do not want all the work with å new mtx, ther is just regular mantain, maby loose some extra weight on the car, harder tires and so one

Ah, I think I see how the air intake system works now. And I don't mind mechanic work, I do all of my own mechanic work on the farm, I meant was what is special about the newer computer and will that do for me? Thanks for your patience!
Manual trans swap Requires the following:
Modular clutch (If u use the modular clutch, you keep your ATX flexplate, and reuse the bolts)
manual trans
Shift linkage
Clutch pedal assembly, cable, hard ware, clutch fork
Driver motor mount, rear boble strut, weld bracket to subframe
Passenger axle
Shifter assembly
Keep in mind you will also need to disable the shift lock in the column, and wire the reverse lights up. If you dont get the manual computer with the switch, the car will start with the clutch out. When I did the swap I had a donor car.
You dont need the manual computer. But your rev limiter will be lower, may affect mpg I am not sure. Just make sure you get a computer from 98-99 neons.

swap out the 49mm ATX TB, for the 52mm ATX TB. Should do a little. Tuned it up? or threw some fuel injector cleaner in it at all since you had it? if ya dont want to make your own intake, ebay sells them cheap from like 30-40 bucks!
