The Neon's shift **** doesn't screw off. You have to pull the boot down away from the ****, and then there's a clip of sorts that fits over a tab sticking out of the shaft, and it lifts right up. The ne **** may or may not fit over the Neon's shifter. The shaft, like the hubs, are bigger than most cars. I went through 3 before finding one that fit... You also won't be able to keep the boot up anymore...

Best of luck!

I put one on my shifter just fine. The boot stays up fine although it does not look 100% perfect. Just pull the tab and when you install the aftermarket one be sure to use the right size sleeve to have a snug fit.

You could modify the shift lever like I did, see attached pics.

Sounds like an idea, How hard was it to tap the shifter?

actually tapping it was quite easy, as it is some fairly soft metal. What i did was cut it down to the desired length with the trusty sawzall and bench vise. Then i used a bench grinder to remove enough metal so the key way was gone. Next step was to tap it in stages starting with a large tap, and working slowlu down to the desired size (3/8-16).
Look closely at the left side in the pic, and you will see where we tested the grinding and tapping to see if it would work.
