Default New to neon and question...

Well i got my own car club. I own a 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS.. So well my boy came up with his Neon and of course my car is broke down like every weekend and I drove with him. I got in his 4 door neon SOHC thinkin it would be slow. That son of a bitch is quick. Its nice. Since my eclipse needs a motor i think ima just save up for a Dodge Neon. I wanted a 1995? 5 speed 2 door but the question Is SOHC vs DOHC? I kinda like the SOHC i believe u can do more work because u just slap on the DOHC parts on the SOHC am I correct? Input me.

The DOHC has more power but youll find the SOHC to be more reliable than the latter. The two door inst very roomy so if your a tall guy youll hate it. Also try to find a 94 built 95 sedan instead because the 94 Built comes with a mopar performance cam and has a better Intake setup. I have a 94 built 95 and a CAI put me into the mid 15's instantly because of the cam already in place. Now you can buy that performance cam but its nice to already have it in the car. There are some DOHC parts that will work on the SOHC but not alot. Throttle body, distributor, little **** like that really. I personally would stay away from the DOHC because of reliability issues.

The SOHC is more durable. It is cheaper and easier to get parts for.

The Neon doesn't have a distributor. The reliability issue is pretty much the same between the SOHC and the DOHC, they both have crap head gaskets unless they've already been changed to the replacement MLS head gasket, the only difference being that the DOHC having more power is more likely to blow the head gasket unless it has the MLS head gasket.

If you found the SOHC Neon to be impressive, then you should try the DOHC version. The SOHC has a **** poor cam which keeps any bolt on mods from being worth anything. If you get a SOHC and want to modify it you will first need to get a better cam, then the bolt on mods will be worth while and show performance gains. The DOHC has more to start off with and responds well to bolt ons right away without the need for new cams. Both motors are easy to build up and have tons of parts available, most of the bolt on parts are the same between the SOHC and the DOHC, so either way you go it's fairly cheap and easy.

my car has the dohc and it doesnt have very much done to it, but it was able to keep up with this subaru wrx that runs around town and an srt-4 that a buddy has. the dohc has a better top end then the sohc does. the sohc does real good til about 90mph then starts to take more time to go faster. the dohc just keeps on goin til about 125, then takes more time. when i was racing the srt-4 we were able to hit 135. then the rev limiter kicked in. scared the hell outa my wife.(and me) i dont plan on doin that again for a while, atleast down that road.

You better have more done to it than what you list in your sig or I'm gonna have to say [sm=bs.gif]. I had a '99 R/T coupe with Mopar Performance chrome header, exhaust, CAI, PCM, Motor mounts and bobble strut, MSD wires and coil, Rex motor mount inserts, MPx front strut tower brace and Potenza RE950 tires, and it had no power options and no sunroof and it was only good for high 14's, maybe a best of a mid 14. My R/T would have had a time trying to keep up with a WRX and it would, but an SRT-4 would stomp both into hash. I was greatly impressed with my SRT-4 when I first drove it and there is no way in hell my R/T could even touch it's exhaust fumes. BTW, how do you know you got up to 135 MPH when your speedometer only goes up to 120 MPH?

Both of you need to keep dreaming, lol. There is no way that you hit 135 in a regular neon, the limiter kicks in at 120 or so. The only way would be with a performance PCM. On the supra subject, I hope that was a joke, lol
