Default Head Gasket + Timing Belt = Running, but with a couple problems...

Here's the lowdown. Took my car to a mechanic buddy of mine, specializing in 4 cylinder cars. We spent all day yesterday disassembling the engine and replacing the headgasket, water pump, timing belt, and various other seals and gaskets throughout. Started her up and it was beautiful...she came right to life....HOWEVER, the following problems occured:

1. Rough Idle: It was almost like it was breathing...rising and falling from about 800 to 1000 RPMS...after it warmed up, the rough idle was gone.
2. Threw a code 22 & fan stays on all the time (no, defroster is not on)
3. Temperature gauge works fine, so we know that the sensor is still good.
4. Loss of power (maybe because of constant fan running?)

It looks like my leaks are gone, but the rough idle, the code 22, and the constant fan is gonna drive me crazy. Fairly positive that the code & the fan are related, but I don't understand why I'm getting a code at all anyway. The car ran beautifully before the work, and now she runs, but not quite as great. I am thinking that maybe the rough idle is due to a vacuum leak, but I've sprayed water around and can't find any leaks at all. Time to take it to a mechanic and have them check it out?

I also don't understand why I'm getting a code 22, especially since my temp gauge is working just fine.....so confused.

Any tips are appreciated.

fan on all the time might be a sticky relay. might throw a code too.

I think that the sensor isn't sending a signal to the PCM (shorted wire or something) but is sending one to the gauge..so the computer thinks the sensor is broken and turns on the fan, whereas I'm getting a signal at the gauges.....guess I'll tear out some stuff tomorrow and try to follow the wire and see if it's broken somewhere.

Yup....Coolant temp sensor was the culprit..fixed it and fan turned off, code gone, and power restored.
Gotta love the simple things.
