Have you checked the transmission fluid to make sure it is at the correct level? do you notice any fluids under your car around the transmission area? it sounds like your tranny is starting to go bad

try lucas stop slip trans fix, i used it in a 97 neon with similar slipping issues works pretty well if your just trying to keep the car going. you can find it at any auto parts store, if its slipping bad use two bottles instead of one.

I thought I had a bad trans too because when it was cold it wouldnt shift into 3rd unless I let my foot off the gas, but I read in a service manual that there is a cable attached to throttle on one end and the tranny on the other, it needs periodic ajustment and after fiddling with it(kinda a pain) for a few minutes the tranny now doesnt do it quite as bad. You might check into this operation also... kinda looks like one of those things that if a mechanic was honest he would do this, but if he was crooked he would tell you that you needed the tranny rebuilt and the customer would be none the wiser!

it has a plastic fitting at the end, your supposed to warm up the tranny with about 15 minutes of driving, then you turn the plastic thing at the tranny side of the cable until it dissengages(I found this a bit more difficult than it explains in the manual) and then it "self-adjusts" then you reattach it. This was all explained fine in theory but in reality I found it a bit more complex than what they were trying to describe... plus I have a feeling that different years have a different fitting so what works for one year may not apply to another, you'll just have to look at it for yourself and feel around to if yours "turns" or not.

Here is a qoute from one of the service manuals that I have about the Throttle Pressure Cable:

"The throttle pressure cable adjustment is crucial to the proper operation of the transaxle. This adjustment positions a valve which controls shift speed, shift quality and part throttle downshift sensitivity. If the setting is too long, early shifts and slippage between shifts may occur. If the setting is too short, shifts may be delayed and part throttle downshifts may be sensitive.

1. Perform the transaxle throttle cable pressure adjustment while the engine is at the normal operating temperature.

2. Release the cross-lock on the cable assembly (pull the cross-lock upward).

3. To ensure proper adjustment, the cable must be free to slide all the way toward the engine, against its stop, after the cross-lock is released.

4. Move the transaxle throttle control lever fully clockwise, against its internal stop, and press the cross-lock downward into the locked position."

Now as I said before this may or may not apply to your particular year. I have seen different ends on the cable that are not "adjustable" or dont have this "cross-lock" attachment. Just thought I would post this thought maybe it might clarify what I was trying to describe and hopefully help to some extent. Although with that many miles/kilometers on it I begin to suspect that you may actually have a bad tranny after having asked a couple of my mechanic friends at the Dodge house.
