I have a 95 neon 2.0 sohc that has been stuttering and backfiring ever since I ran it low on gas. trying to fix the problem I have replaced the fuel filter and the spark plugs. I also ran seafoam through the pcv system three seperate times, and each time I did it seems to be getting better. Am I on the right track, or is there anything else it could be? some people say it is the fuel pump and others say it is not, because a fuel pump either works or it doesn't, there is no "sometimes works".

 

Is the Check Engine Light coming on at all? Head gasket ever been updated?

It's not uncommon for the SOHC to skip a tooth on the timing belt and still run. Could also be a cat that is nearing the end of it's life. Could be a cracked exhaust manifold.

 

it could be the fuel pump i have a msd fuel pump.....it could also be the fuel accumulator but that is not serviceable

 

sometimes when you run a car out of gas it will mess up the injectors...

 

Accumulator? Do you mean regulator? It's replaceable, and doesn't tend to fail, so a salvage yard part should do...

MSD makes a replacement pump for the Neon?

 

I replaced the spark plug wires and now the car runs perfect, but I can not understand why a cel never occured. Apparently the wires were so bad that the car could barely run, and coincidentally this just happened on the same day I ran it low on gas.
