Been done. Whether or not it's "worth it" is up to the owner. Being able to say you've done an SRT-swap into a 1st gen is pretty cool, even if it's gonna cost you $5-7k to have a 230ish HP car. You can build up a non-turbo PT Cruiser 2.4L to over 350 HP for less than that. Of course, if you manage to find a wrecked SRT-4 real cheap, I'd say pick up the FSM's for both years and hop to it.

I think thats an obvious question...it would be easier to mod what you have. You don't have to worry about fab work and cutting, splicing and so on, but you won't have as much HP. So you have to decide on what you want.
