what happens when too much oil is added? PROBLEM?
Ok, seems I goofed up.
I overfilled the oil past the MAX mark on the dipstick a couple of days ago.
Today, with really hot weather, the car started to REALLY overheat. The warning about not overfilling oil is obviously there for a reason... what did I break now?

how far above the max? about a 1 year ago i accidently overfilled my moms Subaru engine by like a quart or so and while we were driving all the gaskets blew and white smoke began to billow out everywhere... car ran fine for about 2 weeks then one day it just wouldn't start until i drained all the oil out and changed it and ran fine... with the exception of constantly having to add oil...

I don't know -- i think on dipstick it goes maybe a 1/3 or 1/2 of inch above the MAX mark.
Didn't have any smoke yet and and gaskets are always leaking
I filled the oil the day before (Sunday night), and yesterday only my wife drove the car so I don't know if it overheated right away or just today.

if you have too much oil in, the crank shaft can hit the oil and turn it into "froth" causing an oil starvation issue. hope you get lucky, drain the excess and let it idle for a while checking to make sure your fans come on while watching the temp gauge.
before you start check the coolant and for any leaks. good luck.

I'm using 10W30.
Funny thing is, i took it to shop and they couldn't find anything wrong, it wasn't even overheating when they took it for a spin. (??) Maybe a fan or something got stuck and then-unstuck?
So now I did change the oil (proper amount now).
thanks to everyone for their comments.
