RTV sealant set up time
Hey everyone with that RTV sealent does it need to det up without the engine being ran for a full 24 hours? Can you immediately begin driving again? I did not quite understand that listed on the instuctions and this sealant is going to be critical not only for me but, for my friends integra. thanks
RTV=Room Temp Vulc-iz-in-a-tion (don't know how to spell). basicly your to wait 24 hrs for the rtv to go from liquid to solid (the V word). the rubber in the rtv is kept in a liquid form by being mixed with a alcohol. when not sealed the alcohol e-vaps leaving a solid behind. because most rtv is used to seal 2 parts, you need to wait for at least 18hrs for the rtv to set up and KEEP a good seal. if it's a not so critical part (valve cover) you can deal with a few hr set-up time with no probs. if it's an inportant part like a water pump or head gasket, wait the FULL 24. by the way what are you doing?
If its a DOHC, its sort of a bitch to do. I bought a special kind of sealant, it was black.. dont remember what it was.. but mine hasn't leaked.. It could just be left over oil from the gasket change too

RTV should be left to set for the full 24 hours before adding back your fluids. I used it for a gasket for my tranny pan. If you let it set for 24 hours and put enough on, it will give you a nice seal.
If you are smoking, there is probably a bad seal somewhere.

I am using it on the vavle cover. I have another car to use right now so I am changing out the head gasket today and, of course I have to remove the valve cover. This and I was curious for a friend of mine who needs to install a vavle cover gasket on an Integra and the manual says to used RTV sealant on his cover as well.
