Default Underdrive Pulley?

Are underdrive pulleys worth the work of putting them on? If so, are they all the same or are there one's to stay away from? I see that the prices vary alot depending on which brand you get. I've been looking at modern performance and they have one for about $200 and one for about $100, then I look at eBay and they have some for as low as $45. I'm looking for a little more performance but not into spending a hundred dollars for half a horse, know what I mean.

UDP's don't add HP, but rather free up HP and they are worth it. The acceleration is better and you can pull harder thoughout the RPM range. Modern's is great and realtively cheap, but I have heard people using the cheap ebay, OBX UDP, and say it works fine.

The biggest gains from UDP's are from reduced weight, not from underdriving. The stock pulley weighs something like 9 pounds, and most UDP's are measured in ounces... so a couple of ounces here and there isn't going to matter that much. If this is going on a typical street car (stereo system, lighting system, etc.), then you might be better off going with whichever has the least amount of underdrive (or get an alternator overdrive pulley...). I just found out my Dad has been going through an alternator every 6 months on his Focus because of this, so I ordered him a heavier duty alt and an alt overdrive pulley for his birthday...

None of the pulleys have had any reliability issues that I remember. The old TTI style (slpis on and gets cinched down with allen bolts for easy install/removal) is probably the easiest, as long as you get it lined up right. The Unorthodox pulley used to be setup so you could take off the outer acessory puley for racing, and easily put it back on to get a/c and power steering back. Other than that, they're all pretty much the same.

Best of luck!
