Default lookin to buy a neon

Hi all, not sure if im lookin for a 1st, or 2nd gen yet, but was wondering if there are any common problems, or what to look for beside the ovious.. we drive about 650 miles every other weekend and need something better than out 16 mpg jeep liberty( 2002 and 140,000 miles already).....just lookin for realibality and maybe a wrt hood and rims.....

just for reliability...i would go for the 2nd Gen... like the last year they made them which was 2005... or an 03 or 04 model i would go for.

Geez....... since we're in the 1st Gen forum you should recommend the 95-99's and the steps to make it reliable!!!!!!! 03 and up are no good, not enough headgasket and bad cluster problems!

Well the 95 would have been the first year out. Not to say stay away from it, but it has its bugs like any first line of production vehicles.

The 99 would be your best option as its had its couple years of refinements since 95.

The only real problem with the 1st gen Neon's would be the headgasket. The factory one's are garbage and will tend to go within around 100m, possibly less or more. Check to see if it has a new MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) headgasket.

The mileage I get back from my 95 is over 40 mpg on the highway and 30ish in the city.

second gens are slow, heavy, and who wants a 4 door...
not all first gens had bad headgaskets.
I've had 2 95's, a 96, and a 98 that never had a problem with one.

The pt motor I got bc it blew the headgasket. That was at 80K.

the 95 did come with the high performance cam shaft!

just fix the head gasket
