That's the EVAP solenoid. EGR on the left side of the engine, a metal tube leads from the TB to the EGR.

Gas smell could be any number of things, not necessarily EVAP.

 

I wouldn't describe it as a gas smell. Its more of a burning smell. Its like when an electrical board overloads and burns a transister or something.

When you say the left side of the engine, wouldn't that be the passenger side?

 

Isn't perspective defined from the direction the car is facing? I'd say "driver side" but not all Neons are LHD.

Now that you mention the smell isn't gas; I think mine is doing it too. Not all the time, but I guess after driving it for a long while. It's possible wire insulation is getting burned up and creating some nasty-smelling products.

 

It could be a number of things. Wires too close to the exhaust manifold- especially the O2 sensors- is common. Take a good look at things

 

is it a sweet smell? I've never smelled a burned transister sorry

 

Is the car running bad.? I had a burning smell in my car, when my coil pack was going out, but the car also ran like puke.First thing I would do Is find out exactly where the clicking is coming from.Use a vacuum tube to hold up to individual parts to see what parts making the noise.Good Luck
