Fiberglass sub box
I am building a fiberglass sub box for my car and was wondering what you guys would recomend for how many layers of fiberglass I should use. I made the box for 2 12 inch 1300 watt subs.
Thanks
Thanks
as a rule of thumb you want to have atleast 1/2 inch of glass depending on the weight of mat that you are using and how thin you can get it rolled on. most glass boxes crumble because of air bubbles so make sure you get a bristle roller to pop those bubbles and stick the mat down. on my boxes i make the fiberglass the same thickness as the woofer mounting ring that i use which is generally 3/4 inch, a tighter less vibrating cabinet is better for crisp sound and deep extension. hope this helps, let me know how it turns out, you have to make about 5 of these things to get good at it. good luck.
I do lots of fiberglass work, heres 1 thing I made for my neon

What fiberglass material are you using? Mat or cloth? I hope you are using mat, if thats the case, 3 layers should be sufficient. Depends on how much time you want to spend. Took me about 4 hours worth of work for the monitor piece, but alot of the time was tedious(sp) stuff, especially the body filler/sanding stage. I hate that

oh and that was 1 layer mat, with a layer of cloth ontop where it was needed. Then the body filler to finish the shape.
These pieces take longer than sub boxes IMO, unless you are doing some crafty design on the box with curves and stuff I wouldnt waste my time with fiberglass, I could build a 3/4mdf box in under 90mins

haha, lets not hijack this thread here, I was just giving an example, but right now its mostly hobby-ish. I do have a registered business in my name as Dark Crescent Customs, but winter months are bad for business, its mostly word of mouth referalls. I install carputers in pretty much any car. Done a few nice ones in some integras, done a few cheap ones (not my choice, the person wanting it was cheap) and ive done a carputer install that costed the person over 3000. I do lots of little things on the side to make cash, but ill make a thread about it before my car is gone no worries. Its just that every day is something new thats wrong with this damn car and I wish I never bought it, and another thing, I cracked the screen and the touchscreen no longer works
it sucks, I may be able to get a replacement glass screen for 50-100 bucks if its compatibly with my unit, or a new screen for 300+ arg
