so i figured i would rip the motor out of my car today, but then decided to see if i could find the problem..
now, the motor had a good knock to it....but it was only once and a while......so,
i took off the oil pan and checked the rods......the #1 rod had about 1/4 inch of play in it[&:]
i took off the end cap and checked out the bearings.....and i couldnt believe what i found, here are some pics of the bearings....hopefully you can tell which is the good bearing that i put in the pics for comparison......its nut....
ends up, when i could hear the knock once and a while, the bearings would actually over lap each other, and there for causing the piston to lightly hit the valves......i checked it all and the valves are fine, just need rod bearings which will be in tomorrow morning, so hopefully i will have it on the road tomorrow nite
i just couldnt believe what the bearings did....not only are they wider, they are also very thin and no longer have the straight edges.....plus there was about 1/4 inch of metal shavings in the bottom of the oil pan[:@]...i just hope it lasts another 2 weeks

RE: wow...just..wow
If the bearings look like thatthe crank is junk. I doubt you can even turn it down enough and the rod will definately be out of round after that.
King bearings are the toughest to buy. Theyre a littlehard on the crank but the rest of the enginewears outbefore they will. I have them in my race peon & it holds together quite well.
That doesnt look like it was starved for oil too bad, it looks like detonation or preignition smashed the bearing then it'll rattle around and get looser untill it spins &knocks like hell

the valves are fine, the rod is fine, but the crank has a bunch of tiny scratches in it......but not deep ones
when i took off the oil pan and looked inside i thought my head gasket might have been leaking because there was a milky colored residue coating the whole bottom of the pan......a minuite later i realized that the milky residue was just all the metal flakes shining in the lightthe inside of my oil pan looks like a bass boat....
i just wanna get the car running a little better so that i can get it to the car wash and then be able to move it around the driveway if i need too....im sure the oil pump is pretty clogged up[&:]
about 2 weeks....thats all i need to to last.....maybe a little less if everything goes right...
then within a month or so it should be up and running better then ever

It wont last very long, but you can try. Ive done that before and they ran enough time to warm up & started knocking again. When that rod beats around on the crank they get egg shaped, were only talking about a couple thousandths of an inch but thats enough for it to take out the bearing quick.
Spud, let me guess that was #1 cylinder wasnt it
