next neon issue...what are the 2 electrical plugs going into the transmission?
one is on top (just below the battery tray near the throttle cable) has like 2 or 3 wires and the one on bottom front facing the cooling fans is a 3 wire set up... are those sensors that would necessarily prevent this damn car from going fully into gear?

One is your reverse/backup lamp switch and the other is your VSS.

ok, the wires next to that dipstick tube is a back up lamp?
because if i disconnect that one everything is fine.. and lights and stuff still work
the one down on the bottom of the transmission by the cooling fans in the front corner doesn`t let the car start at all if i pull that one off...
which connection does which? is there a sensor for fluid levels possibly?

thanks for your help so far, but i have one more question... i noticed on ford models they have a sensor that cuts the transmission off from shifting past 1st..is a common problem on certain ones, but, would something like a park safety switch or a vehicle speed sensor be causing mine not to fully engage in drive?
if i drive down hill and put it in one after backing it up the hill, it laggs because
its in 1 and if i put it in 2 it shifts but if i hit the gas it disengages my transmission.... help please? this car is really driving me crazy

If the VSS is out, then yes it won't shift out of first gear.

so the VSS not working properly would allow it to engage into drive, 2 or 1 ?
i mean it only engages into drive gears on a steep hill but if the gas pedal is pressed it cuts back out.. should i check the VSS ? if so (i hate to be a pain, and apologize) but where is it located (the VSS)??
thanks for your help on everything so far..

The VSS not working won't let the tranny shift out of gear. But it would still let you put it into gear. It's located on the front part of the transmission.

If the VSS isn`t working, would the speedodometer still show how fast the car is going and not allow it to shift? I also found the electrical connection on the top near the dipstick tube has a "torque converter clutch solenoid" is this a part thats replacable and would cause it not to shift into gear? linkages where checked, i belive the VSS is ok, since the speedodometer works still...could i be wrong?

I'm not positive on autos, but in a manual if the VSS isn't working the speedometer won't work either.
