car shudders, need help to fix
ok I honestly dont have time to look through all the old threads and see if this has already been asked but I need help. My neon is having some kind of steering related problem, I think.
Here goes. When I am stopped, and begin to take a turn, and after just starting to go for about 3 second into the turn my cars steering wheel shakes, rattles, shudders,or whatever you would call it, and makes a noise like I dont know how to describe it, but a shuddering noise. It has only lasted for like 3 seconds at the most then does fine. It will not happen if I go slowly from the stop. It will stop immediately if I stompor let off the gas pedal while it is doing it. So I have no clue and my dad has never heard of something like this before. ANy thoughts or ideas as to what it could be and if I can DIY would be great. thanks

The inner cv joint will cause a shuddering sensation. Even the slightest wear on an inner will cause this. It is because it is the first joint in the transfer of power to the hub. I went through this with my 98 and the 03 SRT. The 98 gave symptoms like what you are explaining, and the SRT started after a pass at the track in which I did not hook very well and wheel hopped it a couple of good times. It felt like you were drivingon a washboard road anytime you tried to accelerate. The SRT did this with only 17k miles. [>:]
You will hear an outer mostly in a turn as a clicking/popping sound. True enough that an outer has to have significant wear before hearing it going straight.
My guess is inner cv joint? Which side, who knows. Axles are cheap enough at Autozone and/orAdvance and come with a lifetime warranty. Buytwo, break many!!!

ok thanks. is this something you fixed by yourself or had to have done? do you remember any kind of price range for the repairs? and do I need just the inner cv joint or the entire axle? thanks again
Like I said, most aftermarket axles come with a lifetime warranty! CV joints rebuild kits don't. The axle may be a little more on the front end but a valuable insurance policy in the long run. Especially if you drive hard.
Replacing axles is something you can do yourself. On a scale of 1-10, ten being the hardest, its about a 4 or 5.
If you rebuild the CV joint, you still have to remove the axle, and then disassemble it and rebuild the joint. Removing and replacing (R&R) the axles is easier and faster.
