bangs into drive and reverse

Default bangs into drive and reverse

Hello all

I am new to the dodge world and just picked up a 1986 D150 with a 318 and auto trans. When put it into reverse and drive it shifts real hard,

is this normal? any help would be appriciated

Check the U-joints, they're probably shot.

Also ck your engine RPM it maybe too high,or you have too much backlash in the rear diff.

Yea, I think they call it the spider gear in the rear end. If it is worn, it will bang when placed in fwd reverse or both, depending how worn out it is.

Worn spider gears will make the truck act like it has a posi. Extra backlash between the ring and pinion will cause a clunk in extreme circumstances. With your driveshaft disconnected and both rear wheels on the ground you should have a 1/4 of play in the axle yoke at most. If you are at 1/2 turn or more your rear end probably won't last a lot longer. Also make sure your u-joints aren't loose. Any play at all and they are bad. And, as previously said, an idle that is too high can cause a clunk too.
