Default Need help lifting my 85 Ram

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and thought maybe somebody could help me with a question I have. I want to put 33X11.5 tires on my 85 Dodge Ram. I have front coil springs, and leafs in the back. How much lift do I need to clear a 33? And what is the best way to lift it? Someone had said that I need 4' of lift to clear 33's, is this true? I've looked everywhere for a 2WD suspension lift kit, but unfortunatly for us 1st Gen mopar freaks, its hard to find This is what I'm thinking of doing....... For the front - Putting 1 ton coils from a Dodge diesel of the same year, with coil lift blocks, however I do not know how much lift a diesel coil will give me?? for the back - I'm thinking of simply putting add a leaf to the back, however would it work if I put 2 2' add - a- leaf to the back to give me 4' of lift? I could probly just put a 3' body lift in it, but idk, they just look wierd to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping y'all can help, I've tried pavementsucks but they are loaded with jerks and ****** who think they know everything, but actually know nothing at all lol. Thanks.......The Legend Killer

hey dont worry man youre not the only guy trying to lift a 2WD first gen. another guy in the forum ultimate "D150" (i think) put some 1- ton coils in and they gave him like half an inch or an inch, plus hes got a daystar coil spacer worth 2". i dont know if his coils are from a deisel though, i dont even know if that would make a difference... im pretty sure they would be taller, just because your engine is lighter, but its gonna ride like an empty cement truck. for the rear you can just get the superlift 3 inch lift springs like me. its actually a 5 inch lift but eliminates the block, because blocks are ****. i dont know if that is the right route to go, though, because im still kinda new to lifting these ole beasts still so just experiment if you can i guess! good luck!

Check with truckinsuspension.com.
They have an adjustable coil spacer for up to 3".
Keep in mind the lowering coils I have in my truck are for a newer truck so I would believe lifting coils would work the same,do some checking.

hey thanks for the replies guys. Madmax I see you only have 3' of lift on your truck and you are clearing a 33 correct? how big of a 33 (like 11.5, 12.5 etc) you clearing? yea i agree blocks suck, bout as bad as body lifts in my opinion. but lifting a 2wd ram of this year is a real pain man. yea i had checked on the height difference for coil's between diesal and regular gas trucks, the difference is like 1/2' in height, however the engine weight is lighter so it would pick it up higher. I would like to know if there is a place where i can buy a 2WD suspension lift kit for my 85 Ram?? a friend of mine had suggested a suspension lift, as they are more reliable. Any info would help thanks guys

well i think they come up to like 32 1/2 or some ****... they're 305/70-16's, but im pretty sure i could stuff 315/75's in there... im not sure if it would rub on my front springs or not though. you can go with the coils i suppose, but remember they are meant for a heavier truck so the ride is gonna be a lot stiffer. and noi dont know of anyplace to go for 2WD lift kits for 1st gens. but i know its been done, in fact they raced 2X4's in the Baja 1000. i always thought it would be totally badass to find out what Walker Evans did to the Dodge he raced- and won- in the Baja 1000, n like '74 i think? sorry if im wrong. but tell me this **** isnt totally badass:

Hm. Wonder if you a guy could find out what Evans did by googling it? I think I'm gonna try that, google him and maybe a guy can find some specs of his truck. Suspension lift would be the best thing. And yes you are right his trucks absolutly owns man. I know guys have lifted these babies before, jsut finding out where they got it from. If I have any luck I'll let y'all know. thanks for replying Max.

Well I personally (no disrespect intended Moparborn), but I hate lowering jobs. Your gonna do something to the truck, then lift it! But I must say moparborn's truck is the only truck that I've ever thought was cool lowered.....and I've seen alot of lowered trucks mined you. Right now I'm currently saving up to put my lift in for the truck......I do have a question I just thought of when I was looking underneath my truck the other day. By putting a 4' lift in, what would I have to do for shocks?? I would imagine I'd have to get longer shocks or something to make up for the difference in height ay? cuz the truck needs new shocks in the rear and in the front. But seeing's how I'll be putting lift in soon, I probably am just gonna wait to and put the shocks in at the same time. Thanks for the help so far guys.
