Default Need help, 4x4 issue

First to say hi to everyone since i'm new here, second, I just bought a 91 dodge ram 318 tbi 4 speed tranny long wheel base. The 4x4 keeps kicking out of 4hi, it works fine in 4 low, but every 30 or so seconds in 4 hi it keeps jumping out and grinding, some of the times it has went right back in, a couple of times I had to throw it back into 2wd. Above the sunvisor it has instructions to put it in 4hi while "MOVING" so I guess it has the Ram-Trac t case in it? Any help on this would be nice. Thanks.

Try changing from 2WD to 4high or 4low while the trans is in drive or neutral. I used to try to change from 2WD to 4high and it did the same thing that yours does. Also, check the fluid levels just in case.

If this is the NP205 trasnsfer case, the first thing I would do is drain and refill the transfer case fluid.
Second, you need to go thru your shifter linkage, tighten, adjust, replace worn/missing parts.

I will drain and refill as soon as I can get under the truck, it is raining right now. I tried the idle with a slow pull, same thing. It does not do it in 4 low at all. I do know the guy I bought it from just replaced a vacuum (switch?) item on the transfer case. The 4x4 was not working at all prior to that. I do not know what transfer case it has in it. I thought the truck was a W150 untill I went to get insurance today, vin number comes back as a w250?

W250 is a 3/4 Ton

The switch controls vacuum to the front axle vacuum actuator(motor) to engage or disengage it for 4WD.

Thanks, off topic some, would a 3/4 ton not have 6 or 8 lug nuts? Mine is a five lug front and rear. of course someone may have robbed the axels out of it at one time.

It is a 208 transfer case. Does that make a difference with what I should check?
