Default 87 DODGE RAM 4x4 Question as a tow vehicle

Anyone know about 87 dodge ram 4x4's ? There is a local one for sale. It looks real solid and not banged up. It is jacked up some and does have lock out hubs on her. It is a 318 auto with about 110,000 miles on it. The guy wants $ 2000 for it... He says the differentials are dana 44's...
Here are the questions... I am looking around for a truck to pull my 41 dodge WC4 around on a trailer on... Not any great distance, but say, 200 mile round trips like 6 times a year, for various mv shows that are too far to drive to time after time in the old girl... Now, my 41 WC4, with extra junk in her weighs about
5000 lbs, and a good trailer with electric brakes is, (and I am guessing) is 2500 lbs. So total pull weight is about 7500 to
8000 lbs... Questions... Will a Dodge Ram like this pull 8000 lbs with out tearing the Ram to heck ? How strong are the drive trains in these Rams ? With 110,000 miles on here, assuming she runs well, how much more life can we GUESS the 318 will have, without having to be rebuilt ? Also, it appears to have drums all around... With electric trailer brakes, I think that would be ok, but would like opinions...And lastly, price...Is it in the ball park for one in decent average condition ? Thanks in advance... Bob

8000 lbs is going to be working a half ton pretty hard, especially the brakes. My racer weighed 3200, plus the trailer, tools, spares, etc. was probably around 6-7000 and my '99 1500 318had about all it wanted.
Your best bet would be a Cummins 3/4 or 1 ton, but good luck finding one for less than $5k in decent shape.
Try to at least find a 360, but get the heavier truck. You probably don't need 4X4, so that'll save you some.
And lifted truck are a little less stable for towing.

This is a guy form over at www.turbo-mopar.com He is from Tennessee. I think this would be a MUCH better choice.

For Sale: 1990 Dodge D-350
-5.9 liter Cummins diesel
-dually
-regular cab
-5 speed
-power windows
-sliding rear window
-complete tow package
-5th wheel ball in bed

Bad:
-driver's side power window works intermittently
-AC needs a recharge
-dented passenger side 1/4 panel behind fender
-needs a new headlight switch

It's a dependable truck. It needs a little tlc but it pulls my 24' enclosed car trailer like a champ. I can provide pictures. It's located in Nunnelly, TN 37137 which is about 55 miles SW of Nashville. It books for around $4200 on www.kbb.com. Priced to sell at $3500.

Please e-mail me at kevinisenberg@bellsouth.net.

I have an '81 W150 with a 318 2bl. No idea what year the engine is...it isn't original. Has a decent amount of blow by and the carb is worn pretty bad although I did rebuild it. I had a car trailer loaded down with 4,000 worth of car parts and it pulled that ok. The '75 Chevy 1 ton with the heavy bed on it was a little much. Anything over 40mph and it got pretty squirrely. No idea what the total weight on that was. I get 7mpg loaded and 8 empty...they are not known for their mileage. I paid $400 for my truck, $500 for tires, and $500 for repairs. The body is shot...it was laid over on the driver's side so that is all different colors and the cab is twisted.

I see you're in Florida. Supposed to be lots of Dodge/Cummins around there relatively cheap. And the body's would be good. Look around, you'll be much happier with that. Especially the 15mpg loaded, 20 empty.
