Default Improving ride on 3/4 ton suspension

I just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 and I love it. I think it has the original shocks with 40,000 on the odometer. It rides a little rough which I figured it would, would replacing the shocks improve the ride? If so what is the best brand and type of shock?

this reminds me of the first time I rode in my brother-in-laws 67 Dodge Powerwagon, you litterly had to drive it hard to make the shokes work. Man was that thing ever rough riding. Ok back on track here. Replacing the shokes certainly wont make it ride any rougher. As for what the best brand and type really depends on how a person uses thier truck. If your looking at driving down the highway then something like a gaberel would probably be fine. However if you do a lot of off roading, then something like a rancho, or rough country may be what you desire. I would go talk to a tire shop that handels shockes and explain to them how you use your truck and see what they suggest, its a good starting point anyway.

First let me express my condolences on your illness. Being a democrat is a severe affliction but luckily some education can heal that but I digress. LOL Why would you buy a truck with that much suspension and expect a smooth ride? To fix the ride of the truck you will have to soften the whole suspension to include tires, springs and shocks thereby destroying your load capability. If load capacity is not an issue have at it. I would request that for the rest of us please disclose the fact that you did this to any future buyer when you sell.

Actually if you really want to have a smooth ride, forgive me, but buy a Ford. I worked for a couple of old boys that ran a ranch together one had a Dodge, one had a Chevy, and the one's son had a Ford. The Dodge we swore had the frame bolted directly to the axle, the Chevy rode like a lumber wagon but the Ford we could sail through the field at twenty and not spill a cup of coffee on the dash.

Granted those were all mid 90's models, but I've had chances to ride in all three newer models since, I'm sorry to say but Dodge has a very stiff suspension, and well, Chevy still rides like a lumber wagon.
