Default Brake Lights 1982 W250

Hi, I have an 82 Ram W250. I bought the truck just a few weeks ago. The problem is the brake lights were working but stopped. I have running lights and turn signals. I looked for the fuse for brake lights but the truck doesn't have one that I can find. I bought a repair manual but it doesn't do me any good for this purpose. The book shows a single wire brake switch at the pedal, but I have a four wire switch at the pedal. I put my VOM on the switch but I didn't read any power on any of the wires. Can someone explain this switch to me? I am at the point I have the dash removed on the truck, so I can check just about anything someone suggests, but I'm at the point, I'll have to bypass the original wiring and run all new wires and switch if someone can't help me out. Thanks for any input.

Kik

there should be a fuse for the brake lights. they are not on the same circut as the turn signals and running lights. it does sound like it is a fuse or a bad wire to the switch.

I have a turn signal fuse and a hazzard fuse. I also have one labeled as a trailer fuse. I checked all the fuses just to be sure. Thanks for the reply.

on my truck the fuse is labled "Stop LPS". mabe you should be checking for power at the fuses. the brake light fuse should have constant power. if its not a fuse then it must be a bad wire between the battery and the fuse or switch.

speaking of lights I really need help myself. I purchased a 2002 durango from the state of NJ. It was a former law enforcement vehicle. They did not want me to have police lighting so they indiscriminately cut wires. At present I have all my lighting with the exception of running tail lights...flashers, brake, blinkers, dash, head lights There are a bunch of wires loose in the middle of the console but have no idea what goes to what or for that matter if that has anything to do with my tail lights..please help it is getting darker much earlier now.

Go down to your main public library in the auto section and find the wiring diagrams for your durango. At 10 cents a copy it will cost you less than 1 dollar for all the info you will need. A cheap multi-meter is about 6-7 bucks and you are in business.

Crazzeywolfie, Thanks for the tips. I looked over the whole fuse block. Nothing is labeled "Stop LPS". I fixed the problem though. I ran a new wire, an inline fuse and a new switch. I have evrything working now except for the license plates lights. No biggie on that one. I do appreciate the advice though.

i think it is against the law to not have working licence plate lights. most cops won't bother you about it but there is allway that 1 that might. i would sugest trying to fix it. you should test the light bulb. might be a simple fix.

xkikbxr what is wrong with your lic plate lights? Mine is not working. One was working and i unplugged them to change and now nothing. I am going to buy a new socket if that does not i may just wire something up.
