Buy a copy of the Factory Service Manual for your truck, they average about $40 on eBay and are worth every penny and then some. It goes into great detail on each model of carb.

Don't try to save a few bucks by buying a Haynes manual, the ones they put out now are a waste of paper and ink, spend the extra 20 bucks or so and get the official factory manual.

Sounds silly, but have you checked on wikipedia? I've found quite a bit of answers to questions about specific devices there, and gained enough understanding of various component purposes that I was able to repair myself.

Personally i'd swap it out and put a Rochester 2 barrell on it, super simple carbs and make lots of power, i run one on my stock car, plus there are some cheap carb adapters for it
