Default No speedodometer

Hello all, I have a 1992 Dodge ram 250 and the speedo does not work, I noticed it's electronic, what would likely be the problem, any known boo boo's with these. How would I check this out, thanks for all your help

We had this problem on the forum before and the only thing I could find was check the wiring and connections including the fuse. After that it is a parts replacement thing. If I remember right the sending unit is cheaper than the gauge.

No on the alternate fuse box. Did you check all of the connections especially at the sending unit?

I asked this same question and got no responses, so I just dug into the speedo assembly myself. Here are some suggestions. I have a 91 RC so this should be similar.

This is a hybrid system, the system uses a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that has an analog input at the tranny, converts it to digital and then back to analog. So the 1st thing to determine is does any part of the speedo work? Does your odometer click off the mileage, but no speed indication? If this happens, then you are good to the speedo head. If this is the case you really have no options but to replace the unit. I went to a junk yard and got a complete panel for $28.00. This unit had a functioning speedo, but no odometer.Long story made short, I had to tear both units down into several assemblies and rebuild it using parts from each unit. I did get a completely functioning speedo head. A word of caution, I swapped electronic parts on the speedo around and had problems. I had to keep the speedo decoder and related parts together.

If your speedo and odometer are no-op, you may have just a sensor failure. I have not determined a way to check this yet. But pull the sensor and check that the speedo gear in the tranny is not stripped or damaged.

I jumped into this without thinking through the system, replaced the VSS and found out I wasted $40 on a good part.

Good luck..

Ben
