1989 w150 front Hub Question
If the axles are locked (by whatever means) then you are turning the axles, the ring gear, the pinion, the drive shaft, and parts inside the transfer case any time the truck moves. While the mass and resistance of the axles themselves is small you are adding a lot of pretty heavy parts that normally do not have to move if the axles can be unlocked. I will repeat my recommendation to fix the existing axle locking system wether it remains vacuum actuated or you choose the mechanical Posi Lock cable system. The advantage of the Posi loc manual control is that it gives you a 2 wheel drive low capability for heavy low speed towing even on hard surfaces.
The right axle, the 4 small gears inside the differential, and the intermediate axle turn but the ring gear, pinion, drive shaft, and internals for the front drive inside the t-case do not move when in 2x4 with the axles disconnected. If this is hard to understand it is probably because you don't understand how the internals of a differential work. Please do not take what I just said as anything but me trying to help. The twisting force of the right axle when the truck moves will be used to move the lightest parts instead of the heavier parts due to the higher resistance to movement of the heavier parts. Power will always dissipate thru the path of least resistance. The light parts in this case are the right axle, the 4 small gears inside the differential case, and the intermediate axle. The heavier parts are the ring gear, pinion, drive shaft, and internals for the front drive inside the t-case.
Here is a diagram of a ford rear that is very similar to ours and may help you understand. It is the first picture.

First trust me I haven't taken anything in any way but positive. If I new this stuff I would not be asking LOL So I know your helping and by discribing things the way you have has given me a total understanding of how this thing really works and why there is no mileage to gain from going to just hubs.
I also totally understand now why going with the posi lok really is the best route for me if mine is not welded or damaged in any other way so it makes total sense.
In the spring I will open it up and take a peek and see what I got then go from there. Im also going to put the amsoil gear lube in both differentials along with the friction modifier in the rear as that will be a better lube which will cause less wear in the long run.
This 89 is in great shape. The previous own had a remanufactured engine put in which only now has 12,000 miles on it. The whole underside has been redone with new brake and fuel lines. all new ujoints, shocks, breaks, I got all new coolant line, fuel lines, tranny lines everything.
All I got left to do is change out the driver side front fender, the hood and other front fender is great and so are the doors. and later on get a new box and she will be like new.
I really appreciate all the help you have given me!!!
Thank you and happy holidays

Unless you have a posi traction rear end you can save the money on the friction modifier. It will not do anything for you. Friction modifiers are only needed for the clutches in a posi rear to operate properly.
Thank you once again. I will look up what rear end I have when the good weather comes back.
Now I have a different question since we have the same truck.
When I had my brakes lines replaced the rear anti lock module, I forgot what its called was all rusted up so bad it could not be opened up, repaired or anything.
So they removed it and installed the brake lines so there is no anti lock brakes at the rear anymore.
Being as I liked them and would love to get them back does anyone know where to get that part since dodge does not have them anymore and my internet searches have come up empty??

Disregard my abs question. I just found this site which covers it and I think I will just keep it without abs

I have a 88 W250 with D44 front and Power lock, D60 rear with Power lock. My truck also has Ram track front axle disconnect. I added Warn Supreme's to the front hubs. During the Summer I don't use the 4x4 much except when off road so I just unlock the hubs unless wheeling. About October, I lock them in and have shift on the fly until about April again. Any way when unlocked my front end feels lighter and acts more like a 2wd. I am not too sure about MPG with a NP435 and 410 gears. I just built a nice 360 with non smog j heads and 202 160 valves ported and gasket matched, headers, Comp air gap intake, HEI diz and Ecoil, Double roller time set, 600 cfm Truck Avenger. It doesn't matter what I do It gets about 12 mpg. I did put a set of BFG 255/80/17'5 this week and that seems to be helping. Sure does on the highway.
