I've got a haynes manual and a chilton's manual, I can't figure out what I have, I just got this a little while ago and it needs an intermediate axle on the driver's side
Anyway, help in decoding this VIN would be appreciated

This is what I know about VIN decoding, albeit its mostly for 1994+ newer trucks.

1 = Built in USA
B = Dodge
7 = Truck
J = 7000 to 8000 lbs GVW
W = ? something no longer used in 1994+ VINs.
2 = 2500 series
4 = Extended cab or wagon/van
W = This states what engine you have, and changed year to year sometimes. For 1994+, W means the truck has a V10. I doubt you have that.
3 = Chrysler's "Check Digit", no meaning
H = How sure are you that its a 1987? According to H here, its a 1984 model.
S = Built at Dodge City (Warren, Michigan)

And the last six are your truck's unique serial number.

Let me move this over to 1st gen Ram, see if they can get you any more ideas.

 

Head for the local dealer. They can decode the VIN and give you a build sheet that will identify all of the major components that came stock in your truck.
