Honestly I took the budget route on mine (for now). My muffler was rusted through so I cut off the pipe at the cat, put in about 18 inches of pipe, then a thrush turbo with a turndown right in front of the rear axle. Not fancy by any means but it works. Low rumble at idle without being obnoxious at WOT.

I have the exact same setup on mine 89ram150. Sounds pretty good IMO. My dad had 2 Thrush mufflers in the garage that never made in on his Charger, so one of them went on my truck.

My 91 has the same thing!

Now, my 84 W250 (360/4-barrel)I'm putting back together is gettin hedman headers, 2-1/2 duals, summits copy-cat "flowmasters", with both exiting just in front of the right-rear tire. This aughta sound good.

For my stock 318 it's well worth the $30 I have into the muffler, pipe, and a couple clamps. When I get my 360 built, then yeah, gotta have headers, and some type of dual exhaust with an H or X in it. But that'll also be after my truck goes from flat black to hemi orange.

i had a quiet flow muffler on mine and it sounds pretty good but i find the big difference in sound comes from the catalytic converter. i cut the exhaust off a jeep once and it made my v6 sound more like a jeep straight 6.

i have good neighbors so i try not to **** them off and they seem to be pretty cool about all the noise i do make.. right now i have no exhaust on my truck at all. i am working on fixing all the leaks in my exhaust system.

What problems would I have cutting off the cat, and running straight back to a thrush or similar... Would it screw with the ignition on my 90 w/318?

it should not screw with the ignition. the cat is usually there for emissions. i don't know if you can legally drive without it. depends on where you live.
