I know I'll hate myself for replying but here goes anyways. Did you guys pull out the distributor at all or loosen it in anyway to play with the timing?
The reason I ask is because on the video where it almost started it sounded like mine when I had the distributor 180* off. Mine would sound like it was just ready to turn over and a few times it backfired and had a weird sound. Sounds familiar to me.
Only thing is with your non-knowledge of basic motor tech, it would take a long time to explain even if you by chance understood. If you have someone other than your friend available that is somewhat savvy on timing a motor and access to a manual would be the best way to go. You can go to a main library and copy the pages you need from a manual.
I don't want to make light of your situation cause I know it can be frustrating but damn it was funny as hell to read. For that I give you cudos.
BTW, If you don't plan on driving it, why don't you sell it as is or part it out instead of continuing to drive yourself crazy? I just love Clint quotes and this one applies, "A man's gotta know his limitations."

Here's Donerico's thread on Distributor 180 Degrees Off.

We can give you the experience and knowledge but you must be the hands on in the troubleshooting process and communicate the results back to us or this will go on and on with little accomplishment.
