81 dodge ram van carb settings?(pic)
hey guys hows it going...
dodge van ram 81...i think its a 1500... its old...i have pictures...it has gas(10 bucks even tho i think it needs twenty cause a while before this i tried to start it with 10 wouldnt turn over, put another 10 in started up),oil, coolant,to much tranny oil...
its sorta a project... anyways im trying to get it going, i was wondering if you guys could help me with the carb settings, 2 screws on left side, 1 idle screw on right side that says DONT ADJUST but my friend did anyways..
yes stupid... hmmmm i was wondering whats going on with it, i was thinking of taking off carb and giving it a clean but i think its more than that...something to do with idle screws and gas mixture or something...
it just hasnt been starting it will turn over but ya and i dont wanna get rid of it yet....until i fix it... hehe...
hmmm i have some faststart, its got 10 in gas as i said....(iv been told thats enough to start it but on my ranger 5 isnt enough so iunno about that)... i just wanna adjust the carb to stock settings!, put filter back on and try turning it over...
any help would be awesome, thanks for reading....
OH YA :::: we took off carb to see if we could find a new one at junk yard, put it back on and it was working.... then my friend adjusted some stuff and it hasnt been same sinse... its had 10 bucks in it, iv tried starting it probly 20 times with that 9 bucks in gas in...
any help would be great once again...thanks

the only thing I notice in the picture is that the vacuum hose is not connected to the choke pulloff (the "flying saucer" looking thing on the passenger side) this is what opens the choke a bit so the engine will get some air to start. That is a holley carb and I am not sure but it may have the "backwards" idle mixture screws. {they work opposite of what the old normal ones do.} It should be in the ballpark if you turn the mixture screws all the way in til they bottom lightly and then turn them out about 2 1/2 turns.
thanks for reply.
so you mean turn the 2 on the left, all the way in, then 2 in a half out?...or just one, if so which one, there both so close to eachother..
will idle (right side) mess with it giving me problems not starting...
you mean the part connected to the carb im guessing not the large thing with the rubber connected to it...?
you mean the rusty looking saucer lol?...close to uhh what are they called, the hole barrels(middle)...but right side of carb?...
thanks for reply ill be on all night

yeah the thing that is on the passenger side of the carb with the nipple facing backwards, its toward the back. looks like a flyin saucer sittin on end with a little pipe stickin out the bottom and on the other side it has a linkage that is goin up to a little lever. this needs to have a vacuum hose hooked to it. also, the idfle screws that i mentioned are on the front of the carb, down low on the base plate. the screws tthat you are talking about are the Idle rpm screw (opens the throttle plates a bit) and prolly the high idle adjustment for the choke. these you will have to experimant with but they need to be opened a bit at least with some pressure on them to start out with. but, you will see, when you start to crank the motor, does the choke plate on top open up a little bit (maybe 1/8-1/4), it should if the choke pulloff is workin and hooked up (to a vacuum line like its supposed to be).

few questions, it might sound stupid as i know you have explained yourself quite well...
first of all, vacume hose? just a rubber hose?
so one of those 2, backwards nippe, last picture, right side, the pz of rubber on it, that one?...
cause the other one to the left of that picture is the one connected to the lil pole...
i dont remember if its cranking open the carb, i think it is, and if not my friend was holding it and trying
ill check tho...
im sorta puzzled now
...
yes the idle screw is close to the bottom of the plate(by carb gasket almost).. im not to sure how much it was moved, would it stop it from starting , do ya know about that?..
1im sitting here thinking what else to say, i know im gonna put 20 in gas in tomorrow so i can get that out of the way..
2im also gonna make sure the plates open when i turn it over(pretty sure it does)...
3the 2 rpm screws( left side ) im gonna turn them in finger tight, then both of them 2 in a half out...
