Also the carb was the cause of the backfiring. We're going to take it and have fully rebuilt.

If you are using all of the original linkage, including the arm that you think is too short the linkage can't be the problem. You have to have something connected wrong. Here again if you can post some pictures someone might be able to see something that is wrong because most of us have done this job ourselves.

When the motor is shut off normally so that it automatically parks. Where is the piece of linkage on the shaft pointing? Mine points straight to the drivers side wiper.

It's pointing to the fender. I didn't install the motor, a friend of mine did when it was too cold to work it ourselves.

Drivers fender or passenger fender? If it is the drivers fender that sounds right if it is the passengers fender that is wrong.

Driver fender. I got the carb back on today and it's still backfiring . The only thing left that could be wrong is the exhaust. We're getting it towed to the exhaust shop tomorrow so we should know soon if that helps.

Found out why it was backfiring. Major forehead slapping moment. Double checked the firing order and the #6 and #8 plug wires were switched! Switched them back and it runs fine.
Now we have a new problem- The truck will run perfect for about a mile and then just die like it ran out of gas. We changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump and it's still doing it. Dropped of at the shop today since we're just plain frustrated at the moment.
