Tee in a pressure gauge just before the carb, so that you can see it while driving, to find out if the fuel pressure drops off before it quits.

It's at the shop now so they should be able to test it. Do the 318 mechanical fuel pumps need to timed or just bolted on? I know some fords have a push rod to drive the pump, but didn't know if dodge was the same or not. We put a new pump on, and it didn't seem like it was pumping. I'd like to change it over to electric, but I don't know where to find a block off plate.

There is no timing of the fuel pump. Try here or most good parts stores..

The fuel cell seems to be the problem. The filter is full of rust and there's about 1/4 inch of water in the tank. That'll teach me to buy a $20 used fuel cell! I called around and found out a new bladder will cost almost as much as a new cell, so we're going to order a new cell Monday and I'll try to find a wiper trans at the junkyard tomorrow. We're also going to run an inline electric pump to help out the mechanical pump.

I checked there and they don't list any for a 79 318. I did find one at summit so I'll check into a stand alone electric pump.

The fuel cell is full of crud so we're just going to order a new one. The up side is he'll have a fuel gauge now. The down side is a new 15 gal cell with a sending unit is $235! The fuel pump is working fine. It seems it was all the crap in the cell causing the fuel loss. We drove it home with a piece of fuel line stuck in a gas can and it ran perfect. The only thing I noticed was it was banging and lurching when we went to stop. It sounds like yhe u-joints but I'm not sure.
