I hate to say this but welcome to the club. Mine has never had the power in reverse that I think it should have and I have had it for 20 years. I would be interested if you find out why because no one has been able to explain this to me. I get by because I have 4x4 that gives me a low range.

I'm no expert in mechanics by a longshot, but could it be the differential is geared to high/low?

I can't speak for his truck but mine is stock and supposedly came with a towing package. I know that the trans has a gear ratio of 2.45 to one in low and 2.20 to one in reverse so they are really close. If it were geared wrong in the differential I would think you would notice that in forward gears also.

Yeah you do got a point there. That is really weird. I did some research to see what I could find I came across this and this was pretty interesting. I am not quite sure if you have already checked something out like this or not.

Wow. I have never heard of that problem. If the thing the bowtie guys suggested about the torque converter clutches not working in reverse was true, that seems like a major design flaw in the automatic transmission.

Thankfully I've never experienced this problem. I always lose traction far before I lose power. Got to love that one tire fryer.

i've backed over logs and good size blocks of wood in my driveway with not much effort. i have a bad habit of forgetting to remove the blocks of wood from behind the tires after i am done working on my truck.

I could pull a truck in reverse! Stock '73 727 except for a TC2 shift kit... but it had nuts in R before that too.

This problem exists hot or cold and has always been like this from day one. I have had the truck to my tranny shop. They ran the pressure tests to specifically check the possibility of hydraulic lock-up as the cause. All pressures were normal. I asked about it possibly being the torque converter and was told that it operates the same no matter what gear the tranny is in so a lack of power due to a converter malfunction would show up in all gears and not just reverse.
