89 ram d-100 from tex
was recently handed down my grandfathers 89 dodge ram d-100 318ci 5.2L. it sat for 7 years in the weather because of a simple problem, but as you would imagine it gathered a few more problems from sitting so long. im 21 and work at a well known body shop (caliber collision). everything im doing to this truck will be my first time. so far i have replaced the brakes, calipers rotors pads everything.....because they locked up the first time down the road lol. then did plugs wires and distributer. then we threw a flowmaster 60 seriers on her and at least she sounds a little better. i have cleaned the sh** out of her and its looking alot better than before. the paint was done 7 months before it was parked and you would be amazed at how well it held up...other than the roof.the transmission was done just weeks before it was parked... the first issue im facing right now is its dumping a quart or more of oil a day on the drive way. i can already tell its the oil pan and gasket...already have pan and picking up gasket on the way to work tomorrow. but i know there is going to be other things leaking....thats why im hear.... hope to get some good reliable advice from everyone. thanks for having me
anyone feel free to help me out with what the oil could be coming from...thought maybe the rear main seal...hoping oil pan and gasket will at least help. what could i expect to replace on this truck since it has been sitting so long???
If you are going to drop the pan I would replace the rear main seal at the same time. It is the only seal that cannot be changed without dropping the pan. There is no good reason to take a chance on having to do the same work twice. Be very meticulous about all surfaces being free of oil upon reassembly to insure a leak free job. I would plan on replacing all rubber and cork exterior gaskets sooner or later because they are all probably dried up and hard after 7 years of sitting.
Well....my experience is with my 85 360....
I replace my pan gasket and while I was in there figured I should replace the rear crank seal. I pulled the rear main cap, looked at the bearing and it was good. Now....I was wondering how I was gong to get the old seal out of it's groove. When I looked back up to where the seal is, it was hanging down! That's right, It was so hard that there wasn't anything keeping it in the groove.
Being mine has lived it's whole life in MN (aka The rust belt) I also had a rust hole in the side of my oil pan.... I'm not sure that is something that happens to a TX truck.
Good luck! Sounds like you've done a fair amount of work already.

Dan
