Default OD Auto trans

Has anyone put a A-518 or one of the RH series of transmissions in there truck. Was it worth it, noticeable mpg improvement? How much fabrication for the trans cross-member?

Is it worth it? That would depend on how and where you drive the truck. I don't do much highway driving or even flat land driving so it would not pay me to swap. Here is a good article that might answer some of your questions. Be aware that the gear ratios listed for the overdrive have an extra zero and should read .69 to 1.

Thanks for the article.

I can get a A-500 for $100 with the lower first gear. Think it will hold up behind a 350-400hp 318 in the truck used primarily for towing/ hauling.

I wouldn't even consider that. The A-500 is considered a light duty transmission. It was primarily used behind 6 cylinders and small V-8s in smaller or lighter vehicles.
