Default Pickup runs for 5 minutes, shuts off, over and over?

have a 1991 dodge PU, 3/4 ton, 4x4, 360, auto, 140k.......always ran very good.

my symptoms a little different than other posts, but in my case truck runs fine between the intervals of starting and stopping. Truck doesnt miss, backfire, or idle rough before shutting down.

starts and runs 'fine' going down road for 5 minutes, then shuts off. Wait 5 minutes, it starts up and runs fine again. Put on new fuel filter, seem to run fine next day.

3rd day , symptoms started all over again. Drove down road 3 miles, just shut off. Waited 5 minutes, started up and drove home....Truck hickuped only once during 3 day period. Truck doesnt miss, backfire, or idle rough when running.

blinking light codes are 12 37 35 11 41 21 17 55 thanks for any help

you may want to look into that code 41. i think it might be causing most of those other codes to pop up. have you checked what the voltage is at the battery with the truck running

could maybe check the asd relay and try swapping it with another relay. code 41 is a problem with the charging system and occurs when battery voltage from the asd relay is below 11.75volts.

Try clearing the codes by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then driving again this will hopefully eliminate any "false" codes or old ones. You should also consider connecting a fuel pressure gauge to it while on the test drive.

When it dies do you have spark? Do you have fuel pressure?

Also check the connections on the computer, grounds, and bulk-head connector for being clean and tight.

What happens if you don't wait 5 minutes, and try to start it right away?

it wont start if I try to start it immediately. Have to wait about 5 minutes.

wondering if I should replace pickup coil and crankshaft sensor anyway as old as it is, and if these two may be a sympton?..... I know many say thats not the way to solve problems but I'm 10 miles from town, afraid to drive it in.....depending on where its going to shut off.

It just shuts off, no sputtering, coughing etc.

I replaced the fuel filter, but still seems like when it gets warm it shuts off, cools a few minutes and starts again.

Try driving it with the gas cap loosened. Remove and plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve and try it.
