Default Atf for the transfer case ?

Haynes recommends Dextron II or III ATF for the transfer case (NP241). Is this what most of you guys use ?

Although "back in the day" Dextron II or III was call for the newer synthetic ATF+4 is used by most in them now.

Since Dexron III is what is called for I just can't justify spending the extra money for a synthetic. If you have the money to waste have at it. JMHO

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I have Dextron III on the shelf so may go with that this time.

Had a chance to change the fluid today but I didnt have the right size torx socket. My T60 was too big and the T55 too small, guessing its a T57 - can anyone confirm, save me having to buy a set of big sockets that won't see much use.

Also I wonder if the 3L of Dextron III I have is enough, cant find the capacity listed in the Haynes or the handbook. How much does the 241D hold ?

4.5 pints

Count the splines. It isn't a Torx. It should be a 3/8 socket.

Thanks Seal

Would not have guessed that, looks like torx, so the square shank of a 3/8 rachet should get it out? I will give that a go next time I get to borrow some shop space and I better buy some more Dextron III while I'm waiting !

I use a short extension on my ratchet to try and save my knuckles.
