help tuning carb
I just bought a new carter bbd to replace mine and I need some help on how to tune it. Any help from anyone that knows these carter carbs would be great. Pictures of the different adjustment screws would help too.
this might help you. you will want to adjust screws 64 equaly until it is idling as high as you can get it to an then you can adjust the curb idle so it will idle lower. curb idle screws are not marked on this picture but it is one of the 2 screws on the throttle lever.
I just read this after some mechanic friends install the carb but I am having problems now. They replaced the carb, fuel filter, and ignition coil. They also advanced the timing to 16 degrees which caused problems so I droppd it to 10 per chiltons manual. Well the problem is when I gas my truck it seems like it bogs down and then jumps forward. I talked to my dad and he told me to tighten the mixture screws all the way and adjust (screw 64). This didn't change my idle at all on my truck and it still jumped. My question is what in the world is my problem? Should I advance the timing more, assume the carb I bought is garbage, or change back to the old ignition coil? My dad suggest I change th fuel filter since it sounded like a fuel problem.
are you adjusting both left and right mixture screw the same amount. if you turn one of them in all the way your truck should almost be trying to stall. i have read the carter bbd carbs are not a great carb. can be a bit of a pain.
Yup adjusted both at the same rate all the way in and it idled without a hiccup. it didn't even come close to stalling. That's why I was curious about the carb since when I bought it the pin in part 45 was not included so I wondered if there was any part needed for the screws to work that I'm missing. Is there a chance that it could just be the fuel filter?
if your truck runs with those screws all the way in then i think there might be a problem. if you wind them all the way in it should lean it out to the point where it stalls. i don't think a fuel filter would cause your problem especially since it was already replaced.
I wasn't sure since last time I did fuel filter my truck ran funny too so I swaped back to the old one. Is there a missing part in my carb I can salvage from the used one or is the whole carb a waste?

you could try swapping out that part if you have it. have you tried contacting the person you bought it from? i think it might have been a bit wiser idea to find a carb locally or maybe someone that could rebuild the one you currently have.
