Default D150 tranny swap?

Hey all!

I'm new to the board but not Dodge trucks. I own a '49 B1B and '90 D150.

I want to swap out the 3 speed (727?) for the OD trans (A518?).
What is involved? Yes, I've searched.

It's a 318.

Thanks!

i am kind of a bit lost. i understand that you want to do a OD swap but is the od trans coming out of the 90 and going into the 49? i think the linkage of either transmission should work. this might also help you. they have kits to make the overdrive work like on a normal truck.

ok. the a518(36rh) is the transmission you want. i think you could probably use all the stock linkage for the '90. i think the vehicle you would have to take it out of would have a cable controlled kickdown which in my opinion suck. more likely to fail, harder to adjust and just uglier because of the way it has to mount to activate the kickdown. the overdrive transmissions are also a bit longer. you may need a bit shorter drive shaft but some people say it makes the stock drive shaft fit almost perfect.

you could probably get away with a small extension plate.

if the OD transmission works as good in the trucks as it does in my ram charger it should pay for itself in no time. the ram charger with its overdrive has been getting me a solid 14mpg as apposed to my 81 which is averaging 10mpg. i figure i am saving close to $150/month. only have to fill up 2 times a month with the ram charger. had to fill up every week with the 81.

Oh, I know I'll like it. I had one in my '90 W250 years ago.
