Default 1990 Ramcharger Death wobble

I have developed a death wobble at 50-60 mph. Had all tires balanced which were out 1.5 ounces (quite a bit). That helped some, but it still wobbles sometimes...seems less noticeable or non existence on hot pavement or hot weather. Sent the truck into the mechanic and he said that its the tires, because everything in the front end feels ok but what do you expect for a free diagnostics. I beg to differ because i get creaking on hard turns in parking lots, and when i press hard on the brakes there are two loud creaks as the truck leans forward. Almost like a bent rim is causing the vibration but i know for a fact that the rims are true...anyone know what this is?

You say that it wobbles sometimes so you should check your ball joints, tie rods, etc. If you have a floor jack and a pry bar you can do it yourself very easily.

The creaking could be spring and\or sway bar bushings which you should be able to spot as well.

If you search (google) you should be able to find a procedure or video to demo how to check your front-end.

Well i was reading around and i saw that alot of guys are getting track bars replaced to fix this, is this most likely what it is or is this just for newer dodges?

Ahh thankyou, yea i was wondering because the only thing i can think of is as the trackbar is the front sway bar...just thought they were using a different term for it... evidentially not. At any rate the sway bar bushings are tight but pretty cracked and worn.

You wouldn't notice a sway bar problem until you took a turn too quickly, and ended up feeling like you were driving the titanic. Have you rotated the tires?

Those bushings (and others under the 23 year old RC) are probably the cause of your creaking noise. I would still recommend you check your ball joints and tie rods.

Edit: Are your tires cupped or worn unevenly? Do you have any bulging on the sidewalls?

The "death wobble" that new truck owners speak of is much more than a vibration. On my 2005 Dodge 2500 if you hit a bump at 55 mph or faster the entire truck would start to ossilate and it would not stop until the vehicle was slowed down to under 35 mph.

Here is a link to a good video of it on a Ford...start watching at 1:08 or so:

As stated above I would check your balljoints.

But if you can give any more information that would be good too. Because what you saying is the death wobble may not actually be the death wobble. The death wobble isnt as common on 1st gens as they are later on.

Depending on what its doing, it could be the tires

well i can see the whoje front end pulsating and shaking at 55-60 mph, you can feel it in the steering wheel and the seats and peddles. I've been told by the mechanic that it is probably the tires because he found on the suspension that nothing would be loose enough to cause such a vibration or shake. The tires have camber wear and are cupped slightly he said and its probably due to that. I've had the tires balanced which helped some but the annoying shake is still there. Lol and nothing like that video that is bad
