Default gear ratio

I have a 1987 dodge w250 with dana 44 front (locking hubs), dana 60 rear. Both axles re-done, detroit true tracs in front and rear. Currently 3.54 ratio would like to go to 4.10, or maybe 4.56. The true trac in the front is geared for 3.73 and lower, the rear 4.10 and lower. Will I have to replace the true trac's?
Any thoughts please. I runing 35 inch tires. Is the reference to lower is that numerical, or lower gears.

From what I understand you are already over the limit of the Detroit True Tracs as they aren't meant for use with any tires over 32" diameter.

For the D60 it looks like the break is at 4.10 down so you could use yours for 4.10's
The D44 break is at 3.73 and down so you would need a new one to regear.

If you go that route you might want to look at Detroit Lockers (much better unit)

gear selection is also dependent on your driving, vehicle use etc. You can use this site to determine where you want your RPM range to be: I have 35's with 4.56 and use it as my daily driver and it runs right at the right RPM range @ 65mph.

Seal: the tire size limitation is for the warranty and while yes a larger tire can cause premature wear\breakage if one is overly aggressive. I have Eaton E-lockers and Eaton says not over 33"s but they come in several vehicles from the factory with tires larger than 33's and I've been rather hard on mine with 0 issues.

If you get Thick Cut gears the carrier split does not apply. You can go as deep as you'd like that way.

It is my understanding as well that thicker gears would allow me to keep the true trac's. I am leaning towards a 4.30 ratio. This is not only my everyday transportation but my hunting and fishing rig.

If you can find that ratio in the thick cut flavor, that will be perfect.

I hope so. The main reason is to haul all my hunting gear on heavy trailer, fuel, wall tent etc. It's funny at this age of sixty, I am finally building a truck that does the job, and it's not made of plastic. She has no bells and whistle's, 4 speed manual, 318 (re-done), got rid of the front cad and put in locking hubs, put in 4 barrel and new manifold, change the fuel system (one line), and added a fuel regulator, etc. etc. She has to be strong to haul moose, caribou, and what not. Thanks to all for the help, truly am grateful.

Keep us posted on how things turn out for ya. Good for you, not getting hung up on the extra's, and building what you need to be functional. And plastic sucks.
