The computer controls the timing. What is it your trying to accomplish?

To set the timing: warm the engine to operating temp, disconnect the coolant temp sensor and set the base timing then reconnect the connector.

The Hall Effect switch type distributor was used for 4 years from 88-91.

Check for codes, When is the last time it was tuned up?

check\set the timing per factory spec's
might also consider checking the fuel pressure

Have you checked the injector spray patterns? Your symptoms are exactly what I was experiencing when my injectors failed.

they seem to check out to manuel specs as far as all voltages and pressures......new hoses and filters from tank to throttle body but they do make a chattering noise .....or like a intermittent spitting sound wich at first I thought was over pressured somehow. I still not sure if thats normal but I cant hear it when I put air filterback on. I put a new fuel pressure reg on also.......thats when I started looking at the ignition system because I thought I had covered the fuel system according to my 25.00 hanes manuel ( which appears to be pretty good accept for a couple of just missing
