Default Ticking when truck starts

My 91 D150 would tick for about 2 to 3 seconds on occasion at start up.
I changed out my oil seals because the truck was starting to smoke. Now at start up on occasion the truck makes the clicking noise but it lasts until it reaches temp which is sometimes 5 min. I am going to change out my rear main seal because of a leak and replace the oil pump at the same time. I am hoping this will solve the problem. Any thoughts?

Possibly an exhaust manifold leak.

the ticking at start up could be a lifter. if you just changed the oil and used 10w30 the ticking could have been made worse. thick oil would take more time to get flowing than 5w30 or used motor oil.

hey charlie did you forget you password or did you just want to change user name? mods could have changed your user name if you wanted.

If the truck sits over night it should tick for a few seconds when started up. It is the oil pressure building up. If is persists for longer, it is either an exhaust leak, or something in the valve train like a lifter ticking that needs to be adjusted or replaced. both of which are easy.

I did use a heavier weight oil that I had on hand. I figured that when I change the seals a new oil pump and lighter weight oil will help.

also what brand of oil might make a difference. i know i used some cheap walmart brand oil once and it seemed to make my lifters make a lot more noise at start up for longer than normal. after that i went back to using Valvoline oil that walmart usually has on sale for about $12 for a 4.73L container.

If the mods change your username, do all of the threads and posts change as well? Old threads have new name? Not that I have a ton of stuff, but I like it here and dont really want to start over. Lol

To the OP - Sorry for the mini-hijack. I do believe you are looking at a sticking lifter. It may be gummed up, so it takes a moment for the oil pressure to build enough to get it moving like it should.

I am guessing that it is a rocker arm not adjusted correctly. It is something that happened after you swapped in new oil seals which I assume were for the valves, as in valve seals right? if so, did you remove the heads, or do them in situ with air in the cylenders? Either way, the rockers would have to come off so I also assume you had to readjust them after the seal job right????

My take on it is you need to got back thru them and adjust them again and this problem will go away.

if you change user names the user name on all your previous posts changes but quotes like above will show old user names if the person has been quoted.
