Default Anyone done a headlight brightener? You know the relay thing....

I want to try it if it works as designed. I hear it works great and for the price of a couple relays, and some wire and time, it might be worth it. Some say at least 30% brighter headlights on both low and Hi if you do both. Which I will. This is part of the reason I need a schematic for the gas truck for my truck as well.

does your truck have day time running lights?

if you want see what your lights look like if they were on relays you can turn them on and then hook a jumper cable from the low beam terminal to the positive terminal of the battery. every time you touch the wire to the battery the lights should get noticeably brighter. now after that you want to leave that wire connected to the low beam light and turn the high beams on. then you can try turning on the low beams with the jumper wire. if you live in the country having the low beam lights stay on when you have the high beam lights on may come in handy. i don't think i got any pictures of relay vs no relay on a headlight but i to have one of my backup lights.
one of these backup lights is on relays.

just the low beams on

high and low on at the same time

here is the basic wiring diagram for headlight. just need to know whether you have day time running lights or not to post the right diagram for the front end.

my 91 had daytime running lights and 91 was the first year for the option. since you don't this would be the front end wiring diagrams you would want.

putting headlights on relays is one of the mods i always recommend just because of how often i see people have problem with switches or wiring fail. seems like a common problem and all the new vehicles come from the factory with there headlights on relays. i would rather spend a couple bucks on a new relay instead of the $15-$55 it might cost to replace the headlight or dimmer switch.

I'm glad this thread came up. I was planning on doing this when I do my EFI conversion, since I will be installing a few relays anyway. Thanks for the links and info!

I did it on a motorcycle once and it made a huge difference. But ihad never done it on a car. I will tomorrow though! It is now my Saturday project, and I already have the relays and wiring and connectors.
