i have been told factory service manuals are the best. i have never seen a chiltons but if it is anything like the haynes manual it may make things a bit confusing by listing the lean burn wiring diagrams for the 81-85 dodge rams even though lean burn system was only used on some truck.

Here is the whole story. the person I bought the truck from re wired the ignition swith to a push button for the start system the rest of the key tumbler works for the run circuit. Hers were it gets mind bogling. I turn the key and push the start button and it kicks over and starts. The rpms start out fine then it starts hesitating and cutting out . I put the multimeter on the coil and I get a range of readings from 12 down to 9 even 3 volts I can not get a steady rythm of vlts . Ive changed everything the alt. Vlt reg. Icu. Coil. I will change the dist. Tomorrow morning. But nothing has worked. Im ready to gut the wires and re wire everything from scratch. I think thats the only start point I have left. Or if u wolfie have any ideas.

i don't think you will ever get a accurate voltage reading at the coil.

I understand 1 or 2 volt drop but 8 volt drop that is rediculos. Any suggestions on trouble shooting would be appreciated.

did you remove the wire from the coil to check the voltage. you can't really check the voltage while the truck is running and you will never get a accurate reading while the positive wire is connected to the coil. i think you are suppose to have 9v at the positive wire.
