Default 1984 W 150. 318 2 barrel.

Just bought this truck and it has very speratic idle rpm's. There is a new ignition modual, balast, coil, rotor , cap , . The carb and fuel pump and distributor are the only three old things on the engine. When driving forward at less than five mph, I let off the gas quickly and press the brake firmly , not hard , and the engine will die. No puttering just dead . should I even bother trouble shooting it or just replace all three things and if it keeps doing it then trouble shoot. . Thanks a bunch, and money is no problem just would like some spitballing ideas of What u guys think. P.s. There is some back fire through the carb at idle , when im reving it. Also when I punch the gas it gulps ,almost dies and then revs up.

Sounds like you've got a vacuum leak.

I'm currently having to deal with a lighter variant of what you've got.

Yeah but I am spraying the carb down with carb cleaner and im not noticing any difference. Maybe I should invest in a vacum gauge/tester

It's not just your carb, it could also be anyone of the blasted vacuum hoses strewn about the engine of the mid 80's Dodge.

No, you should start checking then and what ever ports are plugged, for leaks.

Brand new carb, and it idles very calmly at about 600 750. When driving forward and I apply heavy braking it dies, and when in gear the rpms are all over the place. Could the pickup be going bad or the ignition module????. Should I be getting constant steady voltage from the ballast or spiratic voltage im talking +- a few volts. ????

did you tune the new carb? 600 rpm is a bit low. it should probably idle in the 750-1000 rpm area.

Didnt mess with it. Its straight ftom the factory. ill turn it up. But it wont make a difference because it still shuts off when on high idle with choke.
