if you are going to replace the motor you may want to hit up the parts store and get some new wiper linkage bushings since they are probably near the end of there life.

These little guys. They serve as bushings between the wiper motor and linkage and arms. And they are also the sole mechanism of imparting motion from the motor to the arms. Kind of a pain in the butt, but I guess you already have the cowl apart.

If you hadn't yet replaced them, I'd do so now. They pick the most inopportune times to break after they've been spending the last 25 years getting brittle. Like when there is a load on the wipers - as in heavy rain or snow.

parts store should have them in the help section or should be able to order them for you.

Just count the sparkplugs to figure out if its a v6 or v8. V6 will have 6, and a v8 will have 8. The displacement of LA (318 and 360, your only two v8 options in 88) motors are embossed on the drivers side of the block. If I recall, they may also have the displacement stamped on the intake manifold near where it has the firing order. I'm not near my truck right now, so I can't say for sure on that last part.
